I Love the Internet...

As suggested by the title of my blog, I do tend to want to "figure things out"....whether it be the direction my life will take, how I see the world, or how things work...my curiosity, coupled with an attitude of "if I try and fail, at least I've learned something" and the wonders of the internet have served me well.

Case in point:  I had a clogged toilet in the second bathroom...very clogged...don't know if the "littles" had a field day with diaper wipes or if my system was just overwhelmed with having ten people staying here...so, I purposefully plunged at intervals for a couple of days, with no positive results.  Having seen the inner workings of the system while the toilet was being reseated, I realized that it really wasn't that complicated....and if the plunging didn't work, something else surely would...so off to the internet I went...and found a solution!

I poured about  a half-cup of dishwashing liquid into the bowl, followed by a teapot full of boiling water....let it sit about 10-15 minutes, and plunged again.  All of my troubles swirled away...thank you, Internet!  Sure beats a plumbing bill, and I feel so accomplished!

  1. I have a problem toilet, and the 2 plumbers can't find what the problem is. What is this dishwashing liquid and boiling water supposed to do? I'm going to give it a try anyway.)

  2. Sandy - I'm not sure what it does that a plunger can't, but it worked like a charm for me! P.S. The teapot full of water was ALMOST boiling...didn't want to take a chance and crack the bowl! Good luck, and let me know how it turns out! OX

  4. Bernie - Although it didn't say so in the internet article, I think it may have something to do with the slipperiness of the dishwashing liquid.. OX

  5. Great tip, Saranne! Unfortunately, I dropped the toilet paper holder rod thing in the toilet and watched it swirl down the toilet. My husband finally used a "snake" and got the thing out! (My tip of the day is don't flush while you are changing toilet paper rolls!)

  6. I'm chuckling about the internet...from across the globe we come together to talk about cloggged toilets! Later we'll solve the problems of the world, but first we fix the toilets. ;-) Good tip!

  8. Wow, that was an easy and cost-effective way to go. I'm printing this out and taping it in my medicine cabinet for the next time we need it.

And that picture of the fancy toilet-- What will they think of next!

    Glad things worked out.

  9. Lovely Delft commode. Hard to imagine that such a thing of beauty could ever get clogged.
Hot water and washing up detergent will dissolve anything greasy. (Trying to hold my imagination in check here, but it's off and running...). Bleach is always my line of first defense for plumbing clogs. It softens most things after a while. Having 10 people around sounds like fun.
